‘Pearl of the Atlantic’ - ‘The Floating Garden of Europe’. Just two of the names by which this beautiful emerald island is known by.Discovered, (according to legend) by a shipwrecked Englishman and his mistress in 1346, it was later claimed by Zarco on behalf of Henry the Navigator in 1419.
Zarco, named it Madeira, (the Portuguese word for wood), after the thickly wooded hills that meander down to the sea.
