Discovered, (according to legend) by a shipwrecked Englishman and his mistress in 1346, it was later claimed by Zarco on behalf of Henry the Navigator in 1419. Zarco, named it Madeira, (the Portuguese word for wood), after the thickly wooded hills that meander down to the sea.
